Do tampons hurt?

I'm 14 and I just got my period today. I am going to the lake to see my cousins I havent seen in two years they are flying in from texas and I really want to go, but I wont be able to to much in the water because of that. I have always only used pads but if I want to do something in the water I have no choice but tampons. Do they hurt and are they hard to put in? My sister has a munch in her cupboard that I could use, but do they hurt at all?
