Drum tom echoing sound?

I am a beginner drummer, and people say im good at it. However i've noticed a problem, my toms make a long echoing sound every time i hit them. When i see the professionals i see that their toms make a silent clean sound. What should i do? People say it's a matter of tuning or puting heads on your toms. Please help
