I think you should go ahead and ask her out. This person that gave you advice doesn't know the full story and neither do I. But by the sounds of it, I would say it would be better to live without the regret. Go ahead, what is the worst she could say? That she isn't gay? She wouldn't be offended. She might even be flattered.
