What happens to my furniture when I move out of my apartment and it is left there?

I moved out of my apartment and mistakenly left a dresser in my residence. Do they keep this on site in a storage unit, or do they auction it off? Is there a law against auctioning off a residents personal belongings? It has been a year since I moved out, but it wasn't my piece of furniture, and I am needing it back to return to the person. The leasing office never called me in regards to picking it up, and to be honest, I just remembered about it after so long ago. I will call them when they open, but if I can get some idea now, that would be great.
